Updated on June 11, 2020

Recoup is a hangover supplement designed by a “Naturopathic Doctor” designed to reduce your negative symptoms after drinking.

With so many new products on the market today, it can be hard to tell which one is the best for you.

Recoup is formulated by Andra Campitelli who is a doctor of naturopathic medicine. This is also known as alternative medicine and not be confused with a medical hospital Doctor.

On the website, it claims that it is formulated to “eliminate hangover symptoms” including headache, irritable stomach and dehydration.

But does it actually work?

In this article, we’re going to pay particular attention to Recoups customer reviews and formulation to see whether it’s worth investing in.

Recoup Ingredients

recoup ingredients

B-Vitamins
Recoup contains a good selection of B vitamins which are important when it comes to alcohol metabolism. These vitamins are the precursors required to produce the enzymes that break down alcohol.

Magnesium
It’s good to see the inclusion of magnesium in Recoup because levels are known to drop when drinking. Alcohol is a diuretic which means it makes you urinate more fluid than you are consuming. Along with water you also lose essential minerals like magnesium.

L-Glutamine
The website suggests glutamine is included to settle upset stomachs. Glutamine is an abundant amino acid often found in health and fitness supplements. We aren’t quite sure how it helps with hangovers in this case

Ginger
An excellent ingredient in any hangover supplement. Ginger is a natural anti-sickness remedy and we always like to see it included.

Marshmallow root

Marshmallow root
Marshmallow root is an unusual ingredient to see in a hangover pill. It’s not the same marshmallow which you know of as a sweet topping. Marshmallow root is actually an extract from a plant. Its perceived health benefits include skin health and as an antioxidant.  we aren’t quite sure why it’s good for hangovers.

N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC)
This is the precursor to glutathione which is known as the body’s most powerful antioxidant.

What’s missing?

Although Recoup has done a decent job in including most ingredients we like to see in a hangover supplement. There are a few missing that are important:

Dihydromyricetin (DHM)
DHM is making waves in the supplement world after recent research has shown it has hangover preventing properties. Most of the top supplements build their product around this ingredient and is therefore essential if you’re looking to get the best results.

Prickly pear
Some studies have shown that prickly pear can reduce hangover severity by up to 50%.

L-Theanine
This amino acid is found almost exclusively in green tea and has been shown to increase brain alpha waves. These instill a state of calm and could be useful for helping settle hangover anxiety.

How do you take Recoup?

The manufactures recommend taking 3 capsules before your first drink and 3 after your last. When it comes to hangover supplements, most of them recommend this type of dosing.

The reason is, the ingredients need to work as soon as alcohol is in your bloodstream and the toxic by-products of metabolism start to build up.

They suggest you can take up to 4 pills before and after if needed during periods of excessive over-indulgence.

Are there any side effects?

Recoup is manufactured in Canada and all ingredients are naturally sourced. Therefore the side-effect profile is low.

That said, everyone is different and may experience adverse effects. If you do, stop taking Recoup and discuss it with your doctor.

Does Recoup work?

Overall we think Recoup has a decent product with some good ingredients. Most ingredients are research-backed and well-known.

There are a few ingredients such as marshmallow root and glutamine which haven’t been researched in hangovers.

Recoup customer reviews

At the time of writing, Recoup only has 11 customer reviews on Amazon with an average of 4.4 out of 5 which is good. Most customers report feeling better after a night of drinking.

There were a few that said it didn’t work for them.

This is to be expected with any supplement as everyone responds differently to the ingredients.

Anything else to consider?

Sticking to the basics by drinking plenty of water and eating a meal before going out go a long way in preventing the worst hangovers.

Hangover supplements like Recoup can help your recovery, however, it’s certainly no miracle cure.

If you’re planning on getting wasted then you’ll be disappointed with the morning-after effects of any hangover supplement you chose to invest in.
