DHM Detox is another hangover pill on the market that claims to reduce hangover symptoms.

DHM detox belongs to the “hangover supplement” category. There’s quite a few now and we’ve gone through the best hangover pills in another article.

With so many products on the market nowadays, it can be hard to choose which one is the best.

That’s why we’re going to review DHM Detox pills today so you can decide if it’s the right choice for you.

So, with the introductions out the way, let’s get straight into our DHM Detox review.

DHM Detox Ingredients

The best way to tell if a hangover pill is going to work is to look at the ingredients list. After all, none of the packaging, branding, or marketing is going to make a difference. Right?

Here is the ingredient list below:

DHM detox ingredients

B vitamins

The first few ingredients on the list all belong to the B complex group of vitamins. It includes B1, B3, B6, and B12.

Apart from vitamin B12, the other three that are included in DHM detox are all involved in the metabolism of alcohol. In fact, they are involved in the metabolism of everything we eat and drink. Excessive drinking is well-known to increase your requirements of these vitamins and that’s why you’ll find them in most hangover products.

With that said, many hangover products also include B12 which is not involved in the metabolism of alcohol and so is unlikely to be of much benefit. You can read more about this in our article about B12 for hangovers.

Dihydromyricetin

Also known as DHM, this ingredient has been making waves in the hangover prevention supplement world. That’s because research has shown that it speeds up the metabolism of alcohol. And therefore, it reduces the severity of hangovers.(1)

DHM Detox has gone so far as to name their product after it!

Although DHM is a promising ingredient, it’s not the be-all and end-all of hangover ingredients. To date, the research has mainly been carried out in mice. You can read about this more in our article about Dihydromyricetin for hangovers.

N-Acetyl-Cysteine

Also known simply as NAC, this amino acid the precursor to glutathione. Glutathione is the body’s master antioxidant. So much so that NAC is used as an IV infusion for acetaminophen overdose to detoxify the liver in hospitals around the world.

With that said, research into NAC for hangovers has been not shown it to be effective. However, it’s only been researched in one or two very small studies and it may have better results if it were repeated with more test subjects.

Milk Thistle

You’ll find Milk thistle in just about any liver health supplement. And it’s good to see it included in DHM detox pills. Although there hasn’t been much research into Milk thistle for hangovers, it has been shown to reduce liver inflammation in other conditions like fatty liver disease.

Prickly Pear

Prickly pear is another popular ingredient in hangover pills. It’s high in polyphenols which are antioxidants and been shown in studies to reduce hangover severity. So it’s another good ingredient in DHM detox pills.(2)

What’s missing?

DHM detox pills have a good selection of ingredients. There are a few other ingredients we personally like to see included in hangover products.

Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin): It’s unusual that most of the important B vitamins are included and B2 has been left out. Perhaps swapping B2 for B12 would be a better combination.

Piperine: This is extracted from black pepper and studies have shown it greatly increases the absorption of B vitamins. Although piperine by itself doesn’t have any benefits, when combined with other natural ingredients, it enhances efficacy.(3)

Korean Ginseng (aka Panax ginseng): There’s a study that showed subjects given ginseng reported less severe hangovers.(4)

Zinc & Magnesium: Alcohol is known to deplete these minerals. In fact, there’s a study that showed people with low zinc suffer more severe hangovers. (5)

How do you take DHM Detox hangover prevention pills?

The manufactures recommend taking it while you’re drinking alcohol. That means you’ll have to remember to take it out with you and also to take it while drinking.  Each packet contains two capsules.

DHM Detox customer reviews

At the time of writing, DHM detox pills have 87 reviews on Amazon with an average of 3.9 out of 5.0. The reviews are mostly positive.

Are there any side effects?

The ingredients in DHM detox pills are all-natural and the side effects should be unlikely. With that said, everyone is different and may experience side effects. Especially if you’ve not taken some of the ingredients in the past.
