If you’re reading this article, chances are, you’re already pretty clued up on DHM as a natural hangover remedy and looking for some more in-depth knowledge.

A quick search online will find several supplements that contain Dihydromyricetin with hundreds, if not thousands of positive reviews for this natural hangover cure.

You’ll also notice that most manufacturers will use a different DHM dose which can be confusing.

But what is the right dosage for you and your goals?

What is Dihydromyricetin used for?

DHM is extracted from the oriental raisin tree (among other herbal sources) and traditionally used as a hangover cure or to settle upset stomachs.

It’s been used for centuries in Asia, but it’s only recently that manufacturers in the US have utilized DHMs properties in natural supplements.

A 2012 research study showed that DHM increases alcohol metabolism, blocks intoxication and reduces the desire for more alcohol. This ultimately to the understanding that DHM has the potential to reduce hangover symptoms.

How well is DHM absorbed?

To understand what dose of DHM is good for hangovers, we first need to grasp the concept that not all the DHM you consume is absorbed.

In fact, DHM is quite poorly absorbed from the gut with some estimates saying less than 10% of what you take reaches your bloodstream.

Interestingly, however, DHM is absorbed better in more acidic conditions. So the stronger your stomach acid the more is absorbed.

Alcohol is well-known to increase stomach acidity and therefore may enhance DHM absorption.

Nevertheless, the main US-based group which has looked at DHM as an anti-hangover remedy gave their rat subjects a dose of 1-15mg/kg of DHM.

So, how much is this in human weight?

Well, if we calculate a dose of 1mg/kg for 80kg (175lbs) person, this would be 80mg of DHM.

On the other hand, if we calculate the higher dose of 15mg/kg, this would work out as 1200mg of DHM for the same weight.

Therefore, the range would be 80-1200mg of DHM if you were to directly extrapolate the dosage from the study.

Most of the best hangover prevention supplements on the market today usually contain doses in this range which is reassuring.

Are high DHM doses dangerous?

DHM doses 10 times higher than mentioned above were also given to the rats and there were no side effects reported.

In fact, it’s generally regarded as safe to take and several studies mention that they observed no side effects with DHM.

That being said, it’s important for us to reiterate that there are only a handful of studies looking at DHM in general and even less in humans. Therefore if you’re planning to try higher DHM doses for hangovers, do so with caution.

Which DHM dosage is right for me?

The simple answer to this question is that it’s not exactly determined what the best dosage is yet.

If you’re looking to use DHM as a hangover remedy, we would recommend sticking to a popular hangover supplement which has around 300mg.

In addition, by going for a hangover supplement, you’ll get many more ingredients with DHM that will help with hangovers.

Although DHM has shown promising results for use as a hangover remedy, the research so far isn’t conclusive. There is very limited information available on what the best dosage for human use is.

Anything else to consider?

When it comes to a hangover, prevention is always the most important factor. Sticking to the basics like drinking water throughout your night out and eating a meal before going out can make a big difference.

There is some evidence that DHM could help reduce hangover severity so it’s a good ingredient to test out.

It’s important to remember that there are other natural hangover remedies that could also help tackle hangovers.
